< Sailors, Authors, Captains
Lessons on board cover mathematics and physics (sailing, navigation, astronomy), biology and geography (maritime biology, maritime studies, volcanism, rain forest, climates and vegetation zones), history (of sailing, slave trade, history of the countries), German (documentation of the journey and literature), music, arts, Spanish and English (language and culture), politics and business studies. In practice, students give talks about the respective country, its customs and rituals, its language and geography. Excursions are planned by the students themselves and documented with information boards. The topic of xenophobia, in particular, is widely discussed. In maritime biology the students research plants and animals and analyze water samples in a laboratory brought along especially for this purpose. They identify and document maritime mammals (dolphins and whales), learn high sea fishing and also how to cook the fish caught, as this is a delicacy and enriches the menu.
Exhausted but Happy
The highpoint for the students is sailing the "Thor" on their own . In order to do this they have to know about weather and tides and be proficient with the different forms of navigation. They also need to know about the boatswain‘s work and need to know how to sew sails and leather, how to rig ropes, make splices and do carpentry jobs. Only when the students have acquired all these skills can they begin electing individuals for each task. Depending on the nautical area and the weather, they will take over the commands for several days. The crew will only help in an emergency. After this the students feel like the daring masters of the oceans, exhausted but happy.
